Couple Rescues Dog ‘Tied to a Tree with a Gunshot Wound on her Leg’
The Leon County Humane Society has taken to social media to share how a kind couple exploring their new property in Jackson county rescued a dog “tied to a tree with a gunshot wound on her leg.”
The couple who recently moved to their new home were exploring their new property along with the woods around it with their personal dog when they heard a concerning moan coming from deeper within the woods. Despite their initial fear, they followed the sound, only to discover the dog now named Jackie.
“What they discovered was actually not terrifying at all – but horrified them all the same,” the Leon County Humane Society (LCHS) who are now in custody of the dog shared on Facebook.
“Sweet Jackie was tied to a tree with a gunshot wound on her leg. There’s nothing around for miles, and whoever tied her up had not intended for her to be found.”
Leon County Humane Society said the couple promptly brought the dog home, offering her refreshments and a comfortable place to rest before contacting their Dog Coordinator, Amy, to inquire about the appropriate course of action.
“They explained the situation and offered to drive her all the way to Leon County so that we could get her the care she needs,” Leon County Humane Society explains.
“Even though they had only had her for less than a day, she has a way of making people fall in love. They showered her in treats, toys, and affection; dropping her off with some of her favorite treats that she takes so gently, a handmade quilted blanket, and toys.”
Despite Jackie’s ordeal, The LCHS acknowledged her overall positive health condition, describing her as “well-loved and well-mannered, with a beautiful shining coat, and is at a healthy weight.”
Although confirmed microchipped, the shelter noted that the chips was unregistered and had unfortunately led their effort to discover her owner and how she ended up in the woods “to a dead end.”
The shelter shared that a crucial surgery is needed for the dog’s leg due to the infection setting in from the gunshot wound. They are also soliciting donation from the community to foot the exorbitant surgery bill.
“Our vet partners at Ox Bottom Animal Hospital have examined her and are trying to find a way to save her leg, but they’ve warned us that amputation might be the only option. It’s been at least a few days since she suffered this injury, and infection has set in,” they explained.
“If you’re able, please consider donating toward Jackie’s care, and please share this post,” the shelter pleads.
While LCHS hopes to reunite Jackie with her heartbroken owners, the shelter emphasizes that their primary focus is Jackie’s well-being. “There’s a good chance her owners are devastated and missing her, with no idea of what happened,” they acknowledges.
“While we’d love to solve this mystery if we can, our main focus and goal is providing Jackie with whatever possible necessary care to live a happy life and finding her a safe home filled with love,” they shared.
