The seven-year-old dog arrived at Border Tails Rescue, an animal shelter in Chicago in poor health, having been surrendered after three years with her previous owner. “It is with heavy hearts that we share some sad news about our beloved Riya,” the team announced in a Saturday Instagram post.
“Today, we had to make the incredibly difficult decision to let her go. Riya had been facing increasing neurological and physical challenges in the last 24 hours, and despite our best efforts, her condition was deteriorating.”
The decision according to their statement was made by the shelter’s dedicated veterinarians who “determined that the most humane and compassionate choice was to allow Riya to rest peacefully.”
The shelter emphasized that the decision, though “heart-wrenching,” was made out of love and respect for Riya’s well-being.
The rescue center, however, has expressed their profound sorrow over the loss of Riya, describing her as a source of joy and love.
