A heartwarming video of a shelter dog Santo patiently waiting “like a good boy” for a new home after 335 days has captured the hearts of thousands online.
In a 10-second Tiktok video shared on July 15 by Animal House Shelter, the three-year-old Collie/Greyhound mix could be seen sitting attentively, like a good boy, ears perked, and tongue lolling in anticipation of his forever family.
A description uploaded alongside the video reads: “Santo sitting like a good boy so that someone can pick him up at the shelter.”
A caption accompanying the video provides further information about Santo’s story, revealing his breed, age, and lengthy 355-day stay at the shelter. The caption also praises his good behavior around other dogs and older children and suggests that training would be beneficial for his energetic personality.
“Meet Santo, he has been waiting for his forever family for 355 days,” the caption reads. “He is 3 year old collie/greyhound mix that is good with other dogs and older kids. He is very energetic and would thrive with training.” Animal House Shelter urges potential adopters to “come meet this sweet boy at the animal house shelter in Huntley Illinois.”

According to Newsweek, Santo came to the Animal House Shelter in Huntley Illinois August 2023 from a pound in southern Illinois where he was on the euthanasia list due to lack of space.
“Santo would love an active family. He would do best with adults and older children. He loves to play and is super affectionate! He also gets along great with other dogs so wouldn’t mind a doggy brother or sister! He is the sweetest boy who unfortunately has just been getting passed over at the shelter,” a spokesperson for Animal House Shelter reportedly said to Newsweek.
The video has garnered over 45,000 likes and hundreds of comments from viewers expressing their admiration for Santo and their hopes for him to find a loving home. ” Poor baby, he is so cute! Come on people adopt of foster,” one user Almapurr72 wrote.
“He’s tearing up. Oh, poor little guy. Will someone save this angel? I can’t save any of them. I’m too old now and will not take a chance of leaving them alone,” another person Waltonlynn wrote.
Another user, Dee George added: “Heavenly Father, I pray baby Santo finds a loving family or person who can provide him with the warmth and care he deserves. May he find his forever home soon.”
Every year, around 6.3 million animals enter US animal shelters, with dogs accounting for almost half of that figure at 3.1 million. Unfortunately, many shelter animals die, with around 920,000 euthanized each year, including 390,000 dogs.
On a more positive side, 4.1 million shelter animals find permanent homes via adoption each year, with 2 million of them being dogs. However, the route to adoption is typically fraught with difficulties.
According to the Humane Society of Macomb, typical causes for dog surrenders include aging, allergies, behavioral difficulties, housing concerns, financial pressure, relocation, acquiring more pets, and shedding.
Shelters across the globe are working to reduce euthanasia by encouraging adoption campaigns, spaying and neutering programs, and behavioral rehabilitation. Despite their effort to reduce euthanasia, many shelters including the Animal House Shelter in Huntley, Illinois are overwhelmed with the need to care for the influx of dogs coming through their doors. Many have openly cried out about the constantly increasing number of shelter residents.
In a July 13 TikTok video, the Animal House Shelter cried in a video caption writing: “US along with many other shelters are overwhelmed with the amount of dogs and cats coming in. Please if you have the means to adopt or foster and help us help them! come see these babies at the animal house shelter in Huntley Illinois.”
Although shelters provide vital treatment, an ideal environment, and a chance to find new loving homes for numerous pets, the reality for many shelter residents is quite different. Life for many inmates can be lonely. Their days are optimistic, shown by wagging tails and waiting eyes as potential adopters walk by. These patiently waiting dogs, sometimes neglected in favor of younger puppies or certain breeds, long for the company of a human family.
It is always a real delight when these residents finally find someone to adopt them. Not only do the dogs feel relieved and happy, but so do the shelter administrators. Many shelters even organize adoption parties to celebrate these heartwarming reunions, transforming a potentially somber occasion into a joyous celebration of new beginnings.
Last week, an animal shelter in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota held an adoption party for a beautiful dog, Gible, who has been their longest resident spending a staggering 824 days in their shelter.
Gible’s going away party was met with mixed emotions by the Humane Society of the Lakes team, who felt sad to see a bonded dog leave and joyful knowing they found Gible a loving forever home, which is their core mission.
“After 824 days in our care, our longest resident, unofficial mascot, and the best picture taker in the shelter, Miss Gible has finally found her forever home,” the organization announced.
