A severely abused dog found near Buttons Bluff in Botetourt County on Tuesday has tragically passed away leaving the members of the community heartbroken.

According to Angels of Assisi an animal protection organization in Roanoke, Virginia, the dog, affectionately named Mr. Buttons, was discovered by animal control officers in a state of critical health.

Mr. Buttons was suffering from severe anemia, low blood sugar, and appeared to have been left outdoors for an extended period.

“This poor soul was found off of Buttons Bluff in Botetourt County. Animal Control thinks he was left up there, and by the looks of things he’s been on his own for quite a while,” the shelter shared.” “Upon arrival, his blood sugar was in the 20’s and his temperature did not even register. Labwork shows severe anemia”

Although Button could not walk, the shelter noted he lifted his head up a few times, offering a glimmer of hope. The shelter immediately sought veterinary care and launched a fundraising campaign to help cover his medical expenses. Unfortunately, the dog’s condition deteriorated, and he passed away on Wednesday night.

The shelter shared the devastating news of his passing on Facebook, expressing their deep sorrow and calling for increased awareness about animal abuse.

“Sometimes the best we can do when an animal comes in who has been suffering a long time is give them comfort and peace,” the shelter shared.

“The feeling of finally receiving back the love they give so freely. Be it hours or days, it’s never enough, but you pour as much into them to try and compensate for the horrible pain they endured during their lives.”

“We are heartbroken to say this is the case with Mr. Buttons. His heart gave out last night, and took a huge piece of ours and yours with him. In his honor today, please be extra kind, hug your pets hard, and consider fostering or adopting a shelter pet.”

The shelter has also invited the community to participate in a memorial service for Mr. Buttons to honor his memory and raise awareness about animal cruelty

“It feels like he deserves one, and we would love to have a celebration of the love you all sent and bring awareness to the harsh and painful reality of animal abuse,” they shared.

The community has responded with an outpouring of grief and anger over Mr. Buttons’ tragic death. Many have demanded justice for the abused dog and expressed their frustration with the perpetrator. Others have praised the animal shelter for their efforts to save Mr. Buttons and have called for increased awareness about animal cruelty.

“Justice for Mr. Buttons! Your abuser is out there and I’m sure has seen how the whole valley has loved and rallied behind you. I pray they are found and prosecuted to the fullest extent so you can rest in total peace. Thank you to all the loving hands that tried to save this sweet baby,” one user shared in the comment section.

“Mr buttons this breaks my heart with tears in my eyes. My only peace is knowing that you felt loved as you deserved to be in the last couple of days. I don’t think I will ever forget this dog. He has stolen my heart & so many others! I definitely think he deserves a memorial!” another added.

Following Button’s passing, the Botetourt County Sheriff’s Office is actively investigating the case of animal abuse and is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the perpetrator.

“Our hearts are heavy. Mr Buttons crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Thank you to everyone who donated to his care. Someone out there knows something. Please call us and give us the tip we need. We are still offering a reward,” the police department shared on Facebook.
