Dog Found Sitting Beside Frozen River Waiting for Drowned Owner to Return

A loyal Russian dog named Belka has been recently found patiently sitting beside a frozen river waiting for the return of her owner who had tragically drowned  in the river.

The sun reports that on November 24, the 59-year-old man tragically lost his life after attempting to cross a frozen river on his bicycle near Ufa. The brittle ice gave way, plunging him into the icy waters.

At the time, a Good Samaritan bravely tried to rescue him but was hindered by the strong currents and perilous conditions. Unfortunately, the rescuer also suffered severe frostbite and nearly lost his own life in the attempt.

A rescue operation, though hampered by strong currents and unstable ice, lasted for four days. Eventually, the man’s bicycle and body were recovered downstream.

Kirill Pervov, head of the rescue service in Bashkiria, told The Sun that “During the search, the rescue team used an air cushion boat with a hooking device to survey the river bottom.” “Search work was complicated by difficult conditions – a strong current and unstable ice crust.”

RT shared a video on X  capturing the heartbreaking image of Belka who remained at the accident site, day and night, seemingly oblivious to the tragedy that had befallen her owner. The clip shows the dog sadly sitting near the river’s edge, her gaze fixed on the spot where her owner disappeared as if hoping he would return.

RT reveals that despite multiple attempts by the man’s family to bring Belka home, the loyal dog continually returned to the fateful spot.

The video has sparked a wave of empathy and concern, with many viewers expressing their sorrow for the dog’s plight.

One user commented, “So sad. Dogs are so loyal and wonderful companions. There must be somebody who knows how to help him. Poor pooch.”

Another suggested, “They should have allowed his dog have visitation with his owner’s dead body so his dog would know he passed on. His dog doesn’t know he is dead. Poor sweet doggie.”

One user even offered a practical solution, writing, “Build her a warm house there and feed her there also. Play her videos of her owner to hear and see and pet her. She’s not leaving while she’s grieving.”

Time and time again, dogs prove why they are called “Man’s Best Friend.” In a similar display of unwavering loyalty, a pit bull named Afton was recently found guarding the body of its  36-year-old owner in Lewis County, New York.

WWNY reports that the 36-year-old man, Cody Johnson was discovered  deceased in  town of Watson,  Lewis County, New York, on October 15 with the loyal pit bull, Afton, steadfastly guarding his side.

Reports suggest that Johnson may have succumbed to the cold weather condition. However, the exact cause of death is still under investigation.

Sheriff Mike Carpinelli expressed his admiration for Afton’s loyalty, stating “I think it’s in a way a little comforting knowing he wasn’t alone out there,” Sheriff Mike Carpinelli said. “The dog that’d been with him for quite a while. His companion, and the loyalty he had with Cody. He stayed with him all those days and those evenings.”

“I was shown the photographs of the scene where it was,” Carpinelli added, “and just hearing that the animal was with the owner just goes to show the loyalty that dogs have with owners, the loyalty to it.”
